Ivan Mullet

BERLIN -- Ivan A. Mullet, 88, of Berlin, passed away peacefully at his home Monday morning, June 30, 2008, after an extended illness. Services will be Thursday, July 3, at 1 p.m. at Berlin Mennonite Church, with Pastor Ernie Hershberger officiating. Burial will be at Berlin Cemetery, with the Rev. Willard Hershberger officiating.

Cell Phones a Tool to Use with Caution

A couple weeks ago, our newspaper printed an article exploring the benefits and consequences of one of the newest and most popular forms of communication -- text messaging. It was a well-written article that included the statistics of students who use text messaging and some insight into how it affects their social life as students and young adults. But one part still needing explored is how farmers handle text messaging.

Storms that came through our area about 10 days ago brought hail along with them. Some corn fields we were in this week had heavily shredded leaves and tomato fields had plants showing pock marks on both the plants and the fruits. Some have asked what the effects will be and what can be done. In field corn, regrowth after hail can result in "twisted" or "tied" leaf whorls as injured plants recover and new leaves try to unroll. Bertha Elliott

WOOSTER -- Bertha (Ahlfeld) Elliott, 103, of Wooster, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Wayne County Care Center. Bertha was born April 21, 1905, in Indiana to Ernest and Catherine (Ahleit) Ahlfeld, and married L.K. (Derby)Hodgett in 1929. Together they moved to Ohio in 1931, to help start Apple Creek State Hospital, which later became Apple Creek Developmental Center. Derby died in 1959. In 1966, she married H. Bayne Elliott. He also preceded her in death in 1987.

SEVILLE -- Ray and Linda (Fulton) Corp, 59 E. Main St., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday. They were married in 1958 at Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor M.G. Bishop. They are the parents of Dawn Dollar of Seville and Ryan of Copley. They have four grandchildren.

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Roberta Lantz, 95, 1425 Greencroft Drive, Apt. 206, died Monday, June 30, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born Oct. 25, 1912 in LaGrange County, Ind., to Rolin and Nellie (Bontrager) Bontrager, and married Paul Leroy Lantz on March 6, 1931 in South Bend, Ind. He died Oct. 31, 2003.
