Officials Cautious As Jobless Rate Falls

WOOSTER -- Michael D. Gruber, 63, of Wooster, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Wooster Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home with Rev. John Copus officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Garden.

Duane Jones

RITTMAN -- Duane L. Jones, 61, of Rittman, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, of an apparent heart attack while hunting. He was born Aug. 12, 1948, in Wadsworth, to Wendell and Wilma (Fowles) Jones and lived in Wadsworth before moving to Rittman in 1994. He was a 1966 graduate of Wadsworth High School and served in the U. S. Army.

WESTLAKE -- Beverly J. Knapp, 75, peacefully passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009. Loving wife of Wilbur D.; devoted mother of Janet (Lee) Hart, Robert Knapp, and Lynn (Thad) McNeil; treasured grandmother of Bobby Hart and Daniel Hart, Jonathan McNeil and Holly McNeil; dear sister of Donna Esbenshade Wolf (Bernie); daughter of the late Florien and Maybelle Landis.

Waiting for Strickland to Act On Vlt Issue

COLUMBUS -- A number of Statehouse reporters were talking to Senate President Bill Harris last week about the topic du jour -- Gov. Ted Strickland's video lottery terminal plan. You know the one, calling for slots to be placed in the state's seven horse racetracks. The one that's supposed to generate close to $1 billion for school funding -- money that lawmakers and the governor are counting on for their spending plans for fiscal 2010- 11.

Scot Golfers Finish Fall Season On a High Note

College of Wooster Report Paced by another solid showing from sophomore Blake Sword, The College of Wooster golfers capped the fall season with their highest finish in four tournaments as the Fighting Scots came in fourth at the Hiram College Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at Hawk's Nest Golf Club in nearby Creston.

Gotta Love the Archery Hunter

A drive in the country this weekend spotted them, those beefy pickup trucks with extra space behind the driver's seat. The conversion van that no longer is used to take the kids to soccer practice, or the one mom no longer will be caught dead in at the grocery store. Even though it rained most of Saturday, they were out there, parked along a patch of woods or just into the farmer's field, abandoned, at least for a few hours, this weekend.

Outdoor Notes

Trapper education classes A pair of trapper education classes will be held in the area. On Saturday, Oct. 17, the class will be held at the Farmerstown Fur Shop starting at 8 a.m. Participants are asked to take a light lunch.

Oilers Sweep Past Thunder

The weekend got under way on a positive note at the Alice Noble Ice Arena, as the Wooster Oilers downed The Thunder from Philadelphia by a score of 8-2 in National Junior Hockey League action. It was a very physical affair, as is usually the case when the Thunder comes to town. The Oilers outshot the Philly boys 78-23.
