Ever feel the world is full of cynics -- people who appreciate others' good intentions but truly believe the only reason people do good or do the right thing is when they will get something in return?

Sometimes as co-workers, 4-H advisers and I try to teach good character in the schools and instill ethical behavior through 4-H project work, I feel like a salmon swimming upstream. To be honest, some days I do wonder whether it's worth the effort. Are people destined to be what they are and nothing we do will make them change? But then I receive a thank you from an elementary classroom teacher or run into a 4-H alumnus who tells me how 4-H impacted his/ her life and that he/she is now a 4-H volunteer.
