After reading the long list of groceries Herman Mays Jr. remembered in a recent column, Nancy Mackey identified the grocery at the corner of North and Grant Streets as the Texas Market.
"We lived on Grant Street when I was a child and my mom would send me to the store. I started going there alone when I was four," she recalled. "One time no one would wait on me so I sat down on a box ... eventually my mom showed up. Some times my mom would put my baby brother on my lap and she would go to the store.
