After reading the long list of groceries Herman Mays Jr. remembered in a recent column, Nancy Mackey identified the grocery at the corner of North and Grant Streets as the Texas Market.

"We lived on Grant Street when I was a child and my mom would send me to the store. I started going there alone when I was four," she recalled. "One time no one would wait on me so I sat down on a box ... eventually my mom showed up. Some times my mom would put my baby brother on my lap and she would go to the store. Today, Children Services would be called. Those were different times. ..."
