Your Hometown Pharmacist: Know the Potential Dangers of Digoxin

Summary

Digoxin is extracted from the leaves of a plant called digitalis lanata. Digoxin is a generic name for Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps and Digitek. Digoxin helps the heart to beat more strongly and regularly. Digoxin is most commonly used to treat conditions such as congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter -- types of rapid heartbeats.

Digoxin is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for older patients; 90 percent of patients are aged 60 years or more. Digoxin also has been implicated historically as one of the most common causes of adverse drug reactions. Digoxin is also identified as having numerous drug-drug interactions, which, in turn, leads to adverse drug reactions.
