Seven Marshallville Elementary Students Become Published Poets

Summary

GREEN LOCAL DISTRICT -- Last year, students in Jenny Mowrer's second grade Marshallville Elementary class learned how to write a variety of poetry styles as part of a poetry unit. The students wrote cinquains, hiakus, quatrains, color poems and sense poems. These were all assembled in a booklet by each student. One Friday evening in May the students and their parents were invited to a "Poetry Under the Stars" event at the school where students could share their poems with their parents, as well as the group as a whole.

During the poetry unit Mowrer received information about Pine Tree Poetry -- an organization that publishes poems by students age 5-18. Some of the student's poems were so good, she decided to submit them in hopes they would be accepted. This fall seven students at Marshallville learned their poems had been accepted for publication. For information on how to purchase a copy of the book, visit www.pinetreepoetry.com.
