When the corn and soybean fields in the county come off for harvest, it is always interesting to talk to growers and find out how the yields are doing. It's not all that difficult to see how a field looks, but to know how much it yields can sometimes be a surprise.
There have been years when to look at the growth you would think we would be lucky to get an "average yield," but the yield was much better than expected. We've also had those years when you think the plants can't look much better and then get disappointed by what shows up in the wagons. What this points out is that, oftentimes, there are conditions affecting the yields that are not all that plain to see.
