"And which animal actually grows its home and carries it around on its back?"

We all remember this question from our kindergarten days. It was a teacher's tool, something to get the crowd warmed up, a no- brainer meant to draw even the most bashful five-year-old out of his shell. Typically, nearly the entire class would scream "A turtle!" in unison, while somewhere on the periphery a kid in corduroy pants and a collared shirt would insist that "the snail" was a perfectly acceptable answer as well. Occasionally, someone would blurt out, "What about the hermit crab?" In this case the teacher would remind the class that hermit crabs don't actually grow their shells, they simply find one lying around that seems a little better than what they are in at the moment and trade up. (Sort of like my own relationship with used cars.)
