Summary


The temperature was a balmy 86 degrees at only 10 in the morning as I left on my daily walk. The leaves were swirling in the Friday breeze, which in truth was a whole lot more like a gale. The sun was shining bright for late September. The forecasters were calling for a cold front coming from the west, but the only indicator of a weather change was the high wind. Hazel, my big poodle dog, and I were navigating the streets between lawn care trucks and falling leaves when I dialed her phone, 100 miles away.

"How did the chemotherapy go yesterday?" I asked my stalwart friend.
