Two Sisters' Design Organized Christmas Decor Showcases Items Best

Summary

Dear Two Sisters: I love decorating my home for Christmas. Over the years I have accumulated quite the collection of Christmas decor and always add a new item or two each year. I also decorate three trees (foyer, living room and family room). How can I best display my collection so that it feels fresh and new each year? -- Tracy from Wooster

Dear Tracy: We suggest bringing all your Christmas decor out of storage and lay it out on your largest expanse of floor (or table). Sort your collection by theme (Santas, Angels, etc.) or color. Once you have organized your collection, start with one room and select one or two of your sorted "piles." Remember each room should have a focal point, so determine what will be the focal point of the room (fireplace mantle, Christmas tree, creche, or that special life- size animatronic Santa with Reindeer). Work on your focal FIRST. Once your focal is done, begin decorating the rest of your room. Keep in mind that accessories (and this includes Christmas decor) have more visual impact when they are grouped together. In other words, placing one Santa figurine on a bookshelf could look small and lost; while grouping your Santa's will show off your collection and have more visual impact. Remember that you do not have to cover every spare inch of your hard surfaces with Christmas decor. Creating vignettes of holiday cheer throughout your room(s) can be very appealing and usually will showcase your holiday collections to their fullest. Once you have used your existing decor, look around your rooms and add new where you feel necessary. HAVE FUN!!
