All of a Sudden Gall and Fireblight Pop Up On Pear and Maple Trees

Summary

Q: I have limbs on my pear trees that are dying all of a sudden. Any ideas?

A: Fireblight is the most likely cause of your problem. To be certain, check the ends of the stems or twigs that are turning brown to see if they look something like a "shepherds crook." If they have this hooked appearance, fireblight is the answer. Fireblight is caused by bacteria within the tree. If only a few twigs are showing it at this point, you could prune those out, making sure to dip your sheers in Clorox solution between cuts to kill any bacteria. If complete limbs are dying, it is better to wait until after trees go dormant to prune and dispose of them to prevent disease from carrying over into next year. The infection normally takes place during bloom, so spraying them at that time, next year with a streptomycin containing product could help.
