You Can Be Confident in Food Supply

Summary


Recently, every household in America was examining its pantries to see if there were any food product that may have been connected to a specific peanut processing plant because of an outbreak of salmonella. The media did a fine job of informing the public of the potential problem and necessary precautions. The U.S.D.A. did a yeoman's job of compiling an all-inclusive product list that possibly might contain some of the contaminated product.

What wasn't reported was how quickly U.S.D.A. laboratories (working around the clock) gathered outbreak information, isolated a common food, and then traced the food product back to a single source so that potentially contaminated foods could be removed from stores and homes.
